"Do you think they want to hear about it?"
"I don't know. I don't think you can start wanting something till you know it exists."
-p.214, Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
Right here is where many questions can
be answered I believe. How are you suppose to change your lifestyle
if you are not given any other alternatives. With the "Green Movement"
that is being pushed right now, what is being advertised is not
alternative lifestyles but alternative products that can be consumed.
Instead of the trusty old energy wasting incandescent bulb the
new compact florescent must be purchased. Not the old gasoline
burning car but the hybrid, which takes more resources to make
that your average truck. All your worries alleviated with the
solution of money. We need to completely re-evaluate the way we
conduct our lives, not how we buy things. From how we sleep. To
the things that motivate us and our interactions with the world
around us. People lived with in the operating system of nature
for roughly 3 million years then around 8,000 BC agriculture was
birthed. From that moment on we sought to control the environment,
instead of live in harmony and balance with it. We are slowly
realizing that if we want to continue our species existence,
we must change our opinions and values of our role in the world.
What concerns me the most is the overwhelming response I get
from my fellows. That there is nothing that can be done and we
should crack a bottle of champagne and enjoy the last fleeting
moments of humanity and all living systems. Which brings me back
to my opening quote, the possibility that there is just not
the right alternatives being brought to peoples attentions.
What we need is a little more time...

Hi,
Can't remember how I got here but it seems pretty cool.
> not alternative lifestyles but alternative products that can be consumed
This is interesting. There's a whole school of design out there (or maybe an entire culture) that says that if something is to achieve something, it must have that feature designed in. A kind of mechanistic 'if-then' logic. So to simplify something, it must have a 'simplify' function added to it. That is, simplicity flows naturally from additional complexity... which is crazy, of course. (Though actually I see where it has come from...) Much food for thought, thanx.
find my blog this way maybe.
